STEM Pack 1: Unconscious Bias

Biological Sciences – Ecosystems

Additional: Ethics

This STEM Pack is an excellent introduction to ‘having a Science Mind’ for any of the Sciences or Topics

Concepts (South Australia):

Biological Sciences – Interdependence and Ecosystems

Years: 7, 8, 9

Students explore the latest STEM careers – the science and scientists – through videos, research and discussion.

The aim of each STEM Careers Pack is twofold: first, to make students aware of the wide variety of STEM careers there are and; secondly, to help students understand the nature of scientific knowledge, how science influences society and how society influences science (i.e. Science as a Human Endeavour).

During their explorations students will also appreciate how the different areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics interact and are interdependent. They will develop their own STEM literacies and competencies.

This first pack tackles what Unconscious Bias is and how it can be a barrier, guiding students through activities to get them to examine what they think they already know, and how to look at things in a different manner. A great introduction for students to start to use their ‘scientific brain’ looking at the facts alone, which could be used across the curriculum in any area to encourage them to separate fact from feeling, and analyse subjects logically.

This pack can be utilised to benefit students in every area of the their studies, not just STEM subjects and gives a good insight into basic psychology at work in our everyday lives.
