Maths Delivers: Car Braking Distances

posted in: Physical Sciences | 0

Find out how to calculate car braking distances and the difference just 5 kph can make.

This explainer video is well suited to Physics students in Year 7 learning about forces and Year 8 learning about energy.

Video Length: 4:42 mins

Imagine that a car is travelling on a straight road. The driver sees a problem on the road ahead and so brakes suddenly to stop. The stopping distance is the distance that the car travels from the moment that the brakes are applied to the moment that the car stops. Stopping distances are also called braking distances.

This video was created by AMSI, a collaborative venture of the nation’s universities, professional societies, and government agencies, that seeks to integrate research, education and industry involvement to deliver mathematical and statistical capability and provide a strong base for national innovation.
