This week: The Moon for year 1, 3, and 7 students studying Earth and Space Sciences.

Australian Curriculum Codes: ACSSU019, ACSSU048, ACSSU115

Year 1: ” Observable changes occur in the sky and landscape”

  • recording short and longer-term patterns of events that occur on Earth and in the sky, such as the appearance of the moon and stars at night, the weather and the seasons

Year 3: ” Earth’s rotation on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day”

  • exploring how cultural stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples explain the cyclic phenomena involving sun, moon and stars and how those explanations differ from contemporary science understanding
  • modelling the relative sizes and movement of the sun, Earth and moon

Year 7: “Predictable phenomena on Earth, including seasons and eclipses, are caused by the relative positions of the sun, Earth and the moon”

  • researching knowledge held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples regarding the phases of the moon and the connection between the lunar cycle and ocean tides
  • researching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ oral traditions and cultural recordings of solar and lunar eclipses and investigating similarities and differences with contemporary understandings of such phenomena
  • investigating natural phenomena such as lunar and solar eclipses, seasons and phases of the moon
  • comparing times for the rotation of Earth, the sun and moon, and comparing the times for the orbits of Earth and the moon
  • modelling the relative movements of the Earth, sun and moon and how natural phenomena such as solar and lunar eclipses and phases of the moon occur

Each article should take around 5 minutes to read and activities should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this activity:

All must: Define what a moon is and record its appearance over some time (ACSSU019)

Most should: Describe why the Moon appears different over time and state a few people who need to know about the Moon for their career (ACSSU048)

Some could: Describe the phases of the Moon, explaining why it is predictable and state why solar and lunar eclipses occur (ACSSU115)

Consider which of the above learning outcomes you should be aiming for throughout this activity.
