This week: Acids and Alkalis for year 9, 11 and 12 students studying Chemical Science.

• investigating reactions of acids with metals, bases, and carbonates

Year 11/12: “Patterns of the reactions of acids and bases (for example, reactions of acids with bases, metals and carbonates) allow products to be predicted from known reactants”

 

Each article should take around 5 minutes to read and activities should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

All experiments must be conducted under a qualified teacher’s supervision.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this activity:

All must: State what is meant by the terms acid and alkali and identify each using the pH scale.

Most should: Give examples of common acids and alkalis, including reactions between these.

Some could: Describe common neutralisation reactions in terms of acids and bases and predict products given known reactants.

 

Consider which of the above learning outcomes you should be aiming for throughout this activity.
